in no order:

Matrix (1)

Snatch

Pulp Fiction

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Fight Club

It's funny, my Top 5 aren't usually my favourite kind of movie (as most  of my top 5 are action movies) but they had such good plots/directing they became my favourites. Finding Nemo and Shrek are probably 6 and 7  :D Kill Bill worth a mention but was just to gory to make it into my top 10

hmmm,   hard to choose,  but i'll make a list of ones I certinaly consider top few of my list.

Comedy - hard choice, but I think Dumb and Dumber has to take this one.

80's Action - Action Jackson.    "barbeque 'eh? .. how do you like your ribs?"  worth it just for that scene.

Martial Arts - Fist of Legend with Jet Li is probably my favorite.  I also have to say that Jackie Chan's Drunken Master is very good too.

I'm waiting to see Hero, hopefully I can add it to the list too.

(kill bill was a horribly stupid movie)

Science Fiction - X-men movies

Scary/creepy movie -  Event Horizon was one of the few movies that kinda creeped me out in a very long time. So I like it.

Gangster movies -  Payback starring Mel Gibson.

- Casino

OK, i'm going to stop here, but thats a few good ones I dont think i've seen anyone mention
- Lilasiandude

- Sllammer

This thread isn't opinionated enough!

Why do so many put 5th Element in their top films? Was total nonsense! Donnie Darko was kinda a film for people who like to think they're watching something clever and philosophical, without realising they're just watching something that makes no sense however you try to explain it :P 28 Days later was accomplished enough until about 2/3 of the way through it just completely derailed. Last Seduction I wouldn't mind seeing again, was pretty good if I remember rightly but saw it aaages ago. Wouldn't mind watching Indiana Jones 1 or 3 again too!

I have a favorite book though: Shogun!

In some ways Vin Diesel films I'd have higher regard for, cause at least they're not proclaiming to be something they're not. I've read several "explanations" for Donnie Darko, and they're guesses - contrived to fit the pieces together. Honestly, should I need to go looking up the online meditations of its teenage fanclub to get an answer to a movie I watch? I've seen more intelligent films than this and understood them... some interesting threads were thrown in granted, but in the end this movie just abandoned them in a mess.

And would it have half the popularity if the characters had all been middle-aged? I somehow doubt it :P It's set among high school kids, and its youth acolytes like to think they're watching and identifying with something intelligent and spiritual. Donnie Darko has for good reason not been met with critical acclaim, and while you can say critics mean nothing, can you say they're all missing the point? :P

But you're absolutely right.

I'm sorry Sti, I really didn't mean to offend you with my comment, I was joking about them being bad movies, but I could have and really should have thought  about your feelings before I typed that, there's really no excuse for me being so insulting.  I really have no business commenting on the personal likes and dislikes of others and I promise to execute better judgment in the future.

Donnie Darko didn't really catch my fancy either. I just filed it away as a teenage angst movie in the back of my head and moved on.

Oh and don't diss The Rock! He's pretty awesome in Walking Tall. We need more straight-out action movies that don't try to be philosophical, but focus on handing out pwnage on bad guys and make us feel good :)
